The Abacus Core Banking System (CBS) is the flagship solution of Fern Software Inc., a global financial technology company headquartered in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fern Software has specialized in core banking and microfinance solutions since 1979, serving hundreds of financial institutions worldwide.

Abacus CBS was designed to support both retail and microfinance operations, with strong capabilities for group lending models such as solidarity lending, village banking, and Grameen-style lending. Over the years, it has evolved from early client data entry systems into a robust, SQL-based platform supporting modern digital banking needs.

2. Integration of Android-Based POS Devices and Field Automation
Microfinance institutions often collect loan repayments and savings in remote areas, where connectivity and operational costs pose challenges. To address this, BG adopted Android-based Point of Sale (POS) devices to streamline field operations.

BG’s loan officers maintain a strong field presence, collecting repayments and savings directly from clients. The POS devices enhance this process by enabling:

Real-time online transaction recording using Android-based POS terminals.

Instant transaction capture, receipt printing, and access to client information in the field.

Seamless synchronization with the central server, ensuring up-to-date records across all branches.
